All of the lights: What to see and do at Vivid this year

What is Vivid Sydney?

Vivid is Sydney’s annual festival of lights, music and ideas. Historic sights are lit up in colour, including the Sydney Opera House, Customs House and Taronga Zoo Sydney. The event attracts more than 2.3 million visitors a year and it includes big-ticket music performances, creative conferences, talks and workshops.

Quick facts

Vivid lights on: 6pm to 11pm nightly

When: 24th May to 15th June 2019

Where: Sydney NSW

Set foot on the Vivid Light walk at Vivid Light

Every year, hundreds of proposals for light works are entered and the selected works represent a new breed of artistic innovators. This year’s Light Walk curates over 50 radiant works into the largest outdoor gallery of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Enjoy the sights and installations up close and personal on foot at Vivid’s Light walk. The route extends for more than 3 kilometres and the Light Walk wraps around the harbour front, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, Luna Park Sydney, Chatswood and Taronga Zoo. With so much to see, it’s worth planning multiple visits with lots of pit stops.

Visitors are encouraged to ‘choose their own adventure’ with the abundance of close-by eateries, watering holes and break-away spaces making it possible to relax and enjoy the spectacle from multiple vantage points across the city.

Think outside the box with Vivid Ideas

Vivid Ideas brings together leading thinkers, creators and innovators to share their insights across tech, design, entertainment and culture.

Vivid Ideas takes shape over 23 days and nights of future-facing talks, hands-on workshops and industry shaping forums.

If you want to be inspired and learn something new, join one of the many workshops, industry forums and business talks on offer. Whether you are interested in storytelling, podcasting, design and technology, health and wellness, fashion, design, music and art – there is a session for you. Engage with new ways of thinking and get inspired to try a new way of being.

Hear some fresh beats at a Vivid Performance with Vivid Music

Discover emerging talent and revisit proven music talent. Enjoy a multitude of music genres in your favourite venues across the city. Featured artists include Maggie Rogers, Underworld, FKA Twigs and the warehouse party Curveball which transforms Carriageworks into an immersive sonic and visual extravaganza complete with super-scale art installations.

See things from a different perspective

Experience the highlights from the top of the Sydney Harbour bridge. Vivid is back with an illuminated dancefloor in the sky. Dance the night away on top of the bridge to upbeat dance tunes while taking in the brilliant 360 degree views of the city lights from the sky. Climbers wear a special flashing Vivid vest and can experience the display of light sculptures, installations and grand-scale projections from the bridge.
